East Phillips Community Center

After the initial design for the East Phillips Community Center (EPCC) was started in 2007, the updated space opened its doors to the neighborhood in late 2009. Working closely with the East Phillips community, our team navigated the design process to create a welcoming and updated space, that responded to the neighborhood’s needs, as well as meeting the standards set by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. At its completion, the new 14,000 square foot community center included a gym, a teen center, computer room, kitchen, and multi-purpose rooms. The following two years, the playing fields and outdoor sport courts were also upgraded.

One interesting feature of the project is the implementation of solar panels on the roof. By including this source of renewable energy on site, the East Phillips community center is the most energy efficient community center within the Minneapolis Park system. EPCC is about 30% more efficient than the average building in Minneapolis, setting a high standard for future projects for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.
